Use It or Lose It: Why Moving After 40 Isn’t Optional (Trust Me, I Tried)

You know how people love to say, “Use it or lose it,” with a smug little nod, as if they’ve unlocked the secrets of the universe? Well, I used to nod back politely, convinced I understood. After all, I was active enough, right? I took the stairs sometimes. I parked a few rows back at the grocery store. I stretched if I dropped something on the floor.

Then, at 48, life got busy, and I stopped moving for what I thought would be “just a bit.” A couple of weeks turned into a prolonged period of Netflix, work emails, and scrolling on my phone in what I can only describe as the sloth position. It didn’t seem like a big deal until suddenly, getting off the couch felt like I was moving through pudding. My muscles felt like warm butter left on the counter too long, and I was so tired all the time. Not the “I need another coffee” tired, but the “Is it bedtime yet?” tired at 10:30 in the morning.

And let’s not even talk about the mood. I felt down, sluggish, and oddly disconnected from myself. It was like my body and mind were in a fog, reminding me every day that movement isn’t just about fitness; it’s about keeping yourself alive and well.

So yes, it turns out that “use it or lose it” isn’t just a motivational quote on a yoga studio wall, it’s biology. Muscles don’t keep themselves, stamina doesn’t stick around if you don’t call it back, and your mind needs movement like your plants need water.

When I finally started moving again, small walks, stretching, a few light strength exercises, I was shocked by how quickly I felt better. My energy came back (slowly, but surely), my mood lifted, and I felt connected to my body again, like I was waking up from a nap I didn’t mean to take.

If you’re over 40 and thinking movement is optional, let me save you some trouble: it’s not. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to start training for a marathon. Just get up, stretch, walk, dance in your kitchen, or do a few bodyweight squats while you’re waiting for your coffee. It’s about momentum, not perfection.

Because after 40, “use it or lose it” isn’t something to fear; it’s something to live by so you can keep living well.
