Nothing Romantic About It
Self-care isn’t always soft. It’s not just sipping mai tais with friends or soaking in a bubble bath though that can be part of it. The real work of self-care often looks much less Instagrammable: saying no even when it disappoints someone, waking up early to move your body, asking for help when you’re used to doing it all.
True self-care requires honesty. It asks you to look closely at what you actually need to be okay, and that kind of honesty can be uncomfortable. Sometimes it means giving yourself grace. Other times it means giving yourself a little tough love.
There’s also a difference between the things we do to keep ourselves steady and the things we do simply because they bring us joy. Going to the gym three times a week might be part of your structure. Taking a pottery class might just make you smile. One comes with goals and guilt when skipped. The other feels like play. Both matter. Equally.
Let’s stop romanticizing self-care as escape. Let’s start honoring it as the daily practice of showing up for ourselves, with courage, clarity, and compassion.
